Silk Ikat
Perfectly imperfect!
İkat is a labor-intensive technique believed to have originated in Indonesia that spread to several other parts of the world. In Uzbekistan the fabric became a symbol of prestige in the country’s culture. The local name for ikat is abr fabrics (abri means “cloud” in Persian like ebru in Turkish) because the patterns resemble clouds.
First introduced to the fashion world by Oscar De La Renta, ikat was used in the creations of big fashion brands such as Gucci, Balenciaga and Roberto Cavalli. The defining characteristics of İkat are the blurriness and flaw-like parts of the fabric caused by the weaving technique, which makes it unique. Accordingly, once woven the fabric is one of a kind and cannot be repeated!
